Meaning: devoted love, support and defence of the citizens of one’s country.
Patriotism and Christianity go hand in hand; they aren’t incompatible. Patriotism does not redefine Christianity. The present school of thought alludes to patriotism being detrimental to Christians, discouraging pride and support of one’s country, which is the collective support of the nation’s fellow citizens.
Patriotism is rooted in a love of one’s neighbour (Mathew 22: 37-38) and in no way jeopardizes the great commission (Matthew 28:19-20). It had its beginnings in allegiance to Jesus Christ and his guidelines for society and continues today.
Almighty God calls each of his children to live in his granted freedom and to live in personal autonomy with one another. God observes the progressive degeneration of a free society. He continues to confront each, bringing to light the evil afoot in our global nations.
“I am your creator. I see and hear all. Your Leaders make ready their tongues like a bow to shoot lies: it is not by truth that they triumph in your land. They go from one sin to another and do not acknowledge me. Beware of your Authorities; do not trust them, for everyone is a deceiver and slanderer. No one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie and weary themselves with sinning. Citizens, you live in the midst of deception; in their deceit, they refuse to acknowledge me.
See, I will refine and test them, for what else can I do because of the sin of these national authorities. Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit. With their mouths, they speak cordially to you, their citizens, but in their hearts, they have set a trap for each of one of you. Should I not punish them for this? Should I not take my vengeance on such nations as these?
Among my people are wicked men who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch men. Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not plead the cause of the fatherless or defend the rights of the citizen. Once again, should I not punish them for this, and take my vengeance on nations such as these?” Scripture Jeremiah 5:26-29; 9:3-9
In light of God’s words of truth to each of us, Our Father in heaven speaks into our hearts, compelling us to allow him to speak and live through our lives here on earth. Remember, our true allegiance to PATRIOTISM is to our God, Creator and saviour, Jesus Christ, for he alone is the author of a healthy society.
I compel each reader to heed God’s call to you. “It is for FREEDOM that Christ has set you free. Stand firm, then, and do not allow yourself to be entangled again in BONDAGE.” Galatians 5:1
